Fair trade
alt

Fairtrade originated as a method for smallholder farmers and craft producers to access European markets and obtain a better price for their product by bypassing some of the intermediaries involved in the supply chain. Nowadays it is an integral segment of the retail market in many countries. Fairtrade aims to help marginalised producers and workers achieve security, economic self-sufficiency and a wider role in global trade. This market based approach thus aims to help producers in developing countries to obtain better trading conditions and promote sustainability.  It is focused on the transfer and trade of products from developing countries to developed areas and thereby seeks to stimulate greater equity in international trade.  Overall Fair Trade is seen to contributing to sustainable development by way of offering better trading conditions to and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers, particularly in the global South.

Producers and workers are encouraged to become stakeholders in their own organisations.
