Agriculture
altFor many developing countries agriculture constitutes the backbone of the economy and it is important in terms of growth, poverty alleviation, food security, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion. In the Southern African context, for instance, the agricultural sector contributes 17% of the region’s GDP (excluding South Africa) and pays a key role in employment, absorbing 50% of the labour force. Agriculture also constitutes a fiercely debated issue within the realm of international trade at regional and multilateral levels.

Imani Development provides support to national and donor initiatives for the development of small farmers and emerging enterprises in rural areas. We evaluate ongoing programmes for agricultural development, and undertake work that focuses on increasing agricultural trade flows within Africa. Examples of our work include:
  • providing business development services to small farmers and emerging agribusiness enterprises in rural areas of Uganda
  • participating in the Regional Agricultural Trade Expansion Support programme in East and Southern Africa, whose activities ranged from analysis of marketing systems for various agricultural products, especially those produced by smallholder farmers, to the co-ordination of different agricultural trade agreements
  • All ACP Agricultural Commodities Programme in Tanzania
  • Fruit and Vegetable Sector Study in Uganda, commissioned by NORAD
  • SME Capacity Building to Improve Agribusiness Management in Zambia
