DR. NICHOLAS CHARALAMBIDES
Nick is a senior consultant of Imani Development who specialises in trade policy, macro economics and regional integration. Based in Botswana, he has worked extensively in Eastern and Southern Africa. He holds a doctorate from Oxford University and is a quantitative economist. Dr Charalambides has been involved in a number of projects related to trade in the EC-ACP Proinvest and TradeCom Programmes, including in Botswana, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Kenya, Mauritius, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbawe, and also in regional and economic integration in Rwanda and the SACU region. Prior to joining Imani he was part of the USAID-funded Trade Policy Capacity Building Programme in Southern Africa where he assisted Governments, regional researchers and companies in evaluating the impact of trade policies and non-tariff barriers in the context of the WTO, the SADC Trade Protocol and the SACU – US Free Trade Agreement negotiations. He has also worked for DG Trade at the European Commission, where he was analyst for the ACP – EU Trade Unit, including undertaking impact assessments for Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs), the Everything-But-Arms Agreement (EBA) and other trade initiatives (AGOA, Chirac), and the regional integration initiatives of the ACP including SADC, COMESA, EAC, NEPAD and the Africa Union. He has excellent project management skills, having developed these through being a task manager for trade related technical assistance programmes for the Department for International Development (DfID) and USAID Programmes. SIMON HESS Simon is an economic consultant with Imani Development since 2004 and also a Director of Imani UK. He holds a Masters in Economics (cum laude) from Rhodes University, South Africa. The majority of his work has focused on consultancy assignments in fields of economic development, with a special emphasis on international trade, regional integration, aid for trade, agribusiness, fair trade support and systems, and industrial development. In 2004, Simon was recognised by the Economics Society of South Africa for publishing the country’s top Master’s thesis on the spatial distribution of industry in the SADC region. Simon is presently a long term trade advisor within the Foreign Trade Policy Department of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in Lao PDR for a 16 month period, having previously worked out of Imani Development's offices in South Africa and the UK. PHIL MUMBY Phil has a BSc in Food Science & Agricultural Economics from the University of Reading. He has over 25 years experience working in the UK food manufacturing industry in a variety of senior roles, including close working relationships with technical staff at the major supermarkets. He is one of the UK’s leading tea tasters and combines this with unique expertise in ethical trading, having worked closely with both large tea estates and smallholder farmers over many years. His pioneering work in tea supply chains in the 1990s contributed to the formation of the Ethical Trading Initiative, of which he was a founding director and Chair. Phil supervises a number of Imani tea & coffee projects, particularly those with a marketing or retail element.
ARMIN LALUI Armin has an Msc in Development Economics and has been working with Imani since 2007. He is currently working as business development manager, where he is responsible for managing procurement of new projects. He is experienced in budget formulation and monitoring, project planning and programme development. Armin also works as a junior consultant for Imani where he has been involved in various trade-related and sectoral development projects. In his free time Armin coordinates a youth upliftment programme which provides structured mentoring and training for previously disadvantaged youth in South Africa.
Andrew is a private sector development economist, specialising in trade facilitation. He has a MPhil in Development,and has worked in the NGO sector on logistics, fundraising, reporting and project management in the UK and Africa, with a particular focus on Malawi. He is a Director of the Scotland Malawi Partnership, is Country Manager for the DFID Business Innovation Facility for Zambia and Malawi, and led the implementation of Imani Development's Scotland Malawi Trade Partnership. He co-ordinates a range of priate sector development, trade and agricultural development projects, including tea and sustainable tree crops, and is leading the Imani Development Inclusive Business work to help businesses and development organisations achieve joint goals. He conducted the Malawi study into the Global Economic Crisis for the SADC Employers Group. Having been based in Imani’s Malawi office he has recently taken up a new consultancy role being based in Imani Development's UK office in Scotland.
IAIN GATWARD Iain has a BSc in Marine Biology and MSc in Aquaculture from the University of Stirling, Scotland. Since completing his MSc in 2004 he has been working in environmental, aquaculture and development consultancy. Prior to joining Imani Development full-time Iain worked on Environmental Impact Assessments and associated studies for renewable energy systems and was also part of the management team for the Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade project with the Institute of Aquaculture, Stirling University. He currently works as a consultant and project manager for Imani Development in Scotland and will be based in our Malawi office from 2011. Iain is responsible for managing and assisting with projects and proposals relating to trade, aquaculture and environment in the UK and Africa.
FRANK STURGESS Frank has a B.Bus.Sc. (cum laude) and has just completed his thesis on the derivation of discount rates in cost-benefit analysis for the M.Com. (Economics) degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He holds the position of Research economist with Imani Development South Africa. He has experience in tutoring and teaching in South Africa and Malaysia, and has specialised in econometrics and development economics. He practices as an econometrician with experience in economic impact studies and project appraisal.
PATRICK OYOO Patrick has recently joined Imani Development as a Junior Consultant. Before Imani, Patrick worked with the Netherlands Development Organisation-SNV as a Co-ordination Assistant for a network of over 50 Dutch agri-business organisations and development agencies working in the region. His primary focus was on the monitoring and evaluation of Dutch-funded agri-business programmes as well as the activities of organisations within the AgriPro-Focus network. Patrick has been trained as a value chain development tutor and carried out workshops for government extension officers in Kenya. He has experience in the creation of business hubs and business development services (BDS). He worked as project manager for the production of a joint SNV-Techno Serve-East Africa Dairy Development Programme documentary, Improving Livelihoods through Smallholder Dairy Commercialisation. As a Board Member of the Livelihood Foundation, he has been involved in the formulation of a three-year strategic plan on a food security project with the UN Association of Western Sweden in Gothenburg. His educational background is in International Relations and Political Science. JONATHAN SAID Jonathan Said has a BComm in Economics (Hons) from the University of Malta and an MSc in economics from the University of Warwick. After graduating from his MSc in 2004, Jonathan worked for the Centre for Economics and Business Research in the UK, where he was promoted to senior economist. In 2008 Jonathan was accepted into the ODI fellowship program, and worked in the Guyanese Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce. As the lead economist in the unit, Jonathan secured funding for, and launched the Guyanese Competition Commission and Guyana’s Small Business Bureau. Jonathan is passionate about private sector development, and is currently based at Imani Malawi where he is the lead economist in developing the National Export Strategy for the country. GEORGINA TURNER Georgina Turner holds a BSc in Geography an MSc in Sustainability, with a focus on Environment and Development, from the University of Leeds. Before Georgina joined the Imani group in 2010, her involvement in development projects and charity work was extensive. Georgina worked in research and administration for an orphan and community support group in Blantyre, Malawi, as well as fulfilling a research role at the Chembe Water Project at Cape Maclear, Malawi. After an internship with Kadale Consultants, Georgina joined Imani Malawi as a junior consultant. Her key areas of interest range from sustainable forestry projects to private sector development.
