SADC Regional Industrial Development Strategy (RIDS), May 2009
Imani Development was recently contracted by SADC Secretariat's Productive Competitiveness Unit, Department of Trade, Industry, Finance and Investment. (TIFI), to review and refine the process, in developing the regional industrial development strategy. The core focus was to examine as critically as possible the relevance, effectiveness and sustainability of the proposed Articles in the Protocol in addressing growth constraints of the industrial sector that will subsequently contribute to attainment of the global objective stated in the RISDP. To review the current draft Protocol on Industry as systematically and objectively as possible by identifying, analysing and addressing all gaps, shortfalls and inconsistencies in relation to other SADC Protocols and to review the current draft Protocol on Industry to ensure that it addresses the industrial development agenda of SADC Member States.

Imani's first developed the SADC Industrial Development Policy and Strategies framework back in 2001. More recent involvement in the process was the preparation of the SADC Industrial Cooperation Framework, and developed the first draft MoU for a SADC Industrial Cooperation Framework (SADC, UNDP, DTI) 2006. A Sectoral Value Chain analysis for the Sub-regional Conference on improving Industrial Performance and Promotion of Employment in Southern Africa was conducted in 14-16 November 2006, This entailed the value chain analysis and the development of action plans to promote further regional integration in the value chains of the textiles and garments; leather and footwear; fisheries; forestry; machinery and equipment; and the services sectors. (SADC, UNIDO, DTI) 2006. For the finalisation of the Regional Industrial Development Strategy (RIDS) for the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) South Africa, Imani provided technical expertise in consolidating input from experts into a coordinated policy document (DTI, 2006) Imani attended and presented at the two day workshop on the draft protocol on Industry from 13 - 14 May 2009, in Gaborone, Botswana which was attended by all the Member States. The outcome of the workshop was to develop and agree on the vehicle and mechanism for the implementation of the strategy
